We are so very fond of our Dundee home. It’s a great place to work, and it’s equally a wonderful place to live. Perhaps more importantly still, in Dundee meaningful work-life balance is entirely achievable. A huge part of the reason we love being part of the city is because it is a place where our staff can enjoy superb quality of life.
Dundee really is multifaceted. It’s big enough to be a thriving cultural hub, yet it equally offers a kind, friendly and community-driven place where there’s space for calm and quiet; a combination that saw GQ label Dundee as ‘Britain’s coolest little city’.
If you want creativity, arts, culture, big (post-pandemic) nights out and a vibrant social life, Dundee has you covered. If you also like the sound of being surrounded by a variety of beautiful rural spaces, and a local population that will welcome you with a bounty of enthusiasm, Dundee has that too.
The city is also affordable. So affordable, in fact, that you could actually purchase a castle in commuting distance from our studio, nestled in stunning surroundings for about the same price as a larger family home in London. And then, of course, there’s normal sized homes that are extremely affordable. The current average cost of a property in Dundee is a strikingly low £160,320. And, yes, we admit, none of our staff actually live in castles.
Still not convinced? Then consider our four key reasons Dundee is a great place to live and work.
Dundee is creative! 🎮
You might already know of Dundee’s rich history in games development. Dundee has been home to one of the world’s most acclaimed game development courses. In fact, Abertay University’s game development course was the first in the world when it opened its doors in 1997, and through innovatives like Dare to be digital, Abertay remains a hugely important force in raising new generations of global game dev talent. As a result, the game industry that has spring upo locally to Abertay is a powerful one, and full of some fascinating and distinct studios.
Dundee is also the birthplace of iconic series including Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings; proof indeed of its contribution not just to games, but entertainment more broadly. Great things are made in Dundee!
In fact, Tag’s beloved city is also a melting pot for many other artforms across a generous creative spectrum. Dundee is proudly home to a V&A design museum, and DC Thompson - creators of the iconic comics Beano and Dandy. Whatever your creative tastes, you're bound to find something that suits you in Dundee.
In normal times, there’s also a bristling local theatre scene, and Dundee - where the first words of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein were penned - has a knack for producing brilliant writers.
Dundee is sociable! 👫
OK - we write this in the midst of a global pandemic, but hopefully one that is coming to an end soon. And when that happens, Dundee will have a chance to prove it has one of the best nightlife scenes in the UK, or anywhere. There are so many great bars, clubs, events and gatherings. People come from far afield to take in places like Kilted Kangeroo’sLaings’ famed beer garden. But if you actually live here, you’ll find so much to do in walking distance. At Tag some of our favourite local social spots include Duke’s Corner, Darffen’s and the wonderful Neither Inn. A great night out is never far from Tag! So iIf the low house prices weren’t enough, consider how much you’ll save on taxis if you become a resident of Dundee; a city with so much on its doorstep.
Favorites at Tag are: Dukes Corner, Draffens and the good old Neither Inn
Dundee is friendly! 👋
When Tag’s staff move to Dundee from the largest metropolis, they are often quickly captivated by what a friendly place the city is. It’s rare to find that balance, where a place is big enough to be thriving, but also manages to court a friendly atmosphere with a powerful sense of community.
We’re certainly in love with our local area. Take the brilliant 24-hour bakery, for example, which might be Dundee’s most treasured local spot. Some of our staff that are a little more devoted to pastries and pies have become real regulars, finding birthday cards from Clark’s staff waiting for them if they visit on the right day. That’s not just a lovely story; it's a sign of a city that you can meaningfully become part of. And that is so important for quality of life and work-life balance.
One thing’s for sure; if you move to Dundee, you won’t feel like a stranger for long.
Dundee is beautiful! 😍
If you hadn’t picked up on this already, here at Tag love the countryside that surrounds Dundee. If you really want to get away from modern life, in under an hour you can find yourself in the heart of Highland Perthshire, where you can lose yourself to exploring dramatic mountains, deep glens and stunning lochs. Meanwhile, the coast is never far away, and in the firth of the glorious River Tay - which runs right through Dundee - there’s even an award winning and sandy beach, Broughty Ferry.
Prefer urban landscapes? The heart of the city itself is an utterly beautiful place where old and new buildings share space and mix Dundee’s rich history with it’s modern, forward thinking present.
So if you like the sound of working in a place where space for your thoughts, terrain for an active lifestyle or stunning cityscapes come in abundant supply, Dundee has it.
